My Home Office is Closed on Saturdays

Because I work from a home office, I can usually make my own schedule. If I need to stop working in the middle of a weekday to take care of my daughter, run to the post office, or go grocery shopping, I can.

But, I often find that I don't appreciate it as much as I thought I would when I was working in a corporate office.

Even if I've been up early or late to get a project done or meet an urgent deadline, there's still part of me that's programmed to feel like I should be working during "normal business hours." I definitely still have some of the workaholic mindset I had at my corporate job, and it's a hard habit to break.

That's why I love Saturdays. I generally leave them open for fun and family time. And, while I may sneak some work in here and there, I don't have that "I should be working" feeling during any downtime.

I'm not in a rush; no scheduled phone calls or meetings. No milestones to hit or projects to turn in. Just my husband, my daughter, and me.

I'm off to enjoy it now...

I totally agree with you on the "feel like you have to be doing something" phenomenon.Sometimes it takes quite a lot of "self-talk" to make myself let some things go.

I envy you! I want my Saturdays ... and late nights ... and early mornings back. Right now I'm just in the middle of losing a job and trying to start my own consulting business. So no rest for the weary.

But I totally agree - Saturdays are great to take a day off. No one should have to work all the time.

dellgirl - thanks. Glad to know I'm not the only one doing the "self-talk!"

easton - thanks for checking in! As you saw from the late-night tweet about my local blog, I sometimes give up Saturdays at the expense of my sleep during the week. But somehow, it's still worth it. I need a break where I turn everything off and get outside, even if the blog posts, projects, laundry, and everything else is piling up.

I started consulting after losing a job once, and did so again when I moved across country last year. It's a scary time, but all the hard work will pay off and I bet you'll get some of your time back soon. I look forward to be following the story as it develops on BusinessBlogWire and Visionary Blogging!
